37% rural youth sans Internet access: Study
The Modi government, which never tires of swearing by an impending digital revolution, needs to pull up its socks if the current status of the National Optical Fibre Network is anything to go by. The dream of bringing broadband services to 2.5 lakh gram panchayats across India is still far from being realised with the deadline for completion only 14 months away. Four years after the Centre approved the `20,000-crore project, only 6 per cent of the work has been completed. The blame for the slow progress lies squarely with the department of telecom, which failed to speed up the rollout, despite repeated prodding by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Prime Minister’s Office.
