37% rural youth sans Internet access: Study
After facing heat over its Free Basic campaign in India, Facebook has now collaborated with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) by purchasing bandwidth for Rs 10 crore in 125 rural areas for three years to break connectivity barriers with an aim to bridge the digital divide in India.
At present, Facebook is testing the Express Wi-Fi service, which was launched in India ahead of Mark Zuckerberg’s visit last year. A Business Standard report has revealed that these hotspots are being setup by BSNL’s partner, QuadGen.
Anupam Shrivastava, BSNL chairman and managing director, told the business daily that this Wifi services operates on an unlicensed band – 2.4 GHz frequency – and users can get a speed of about two megabits per second, or Mbps.
