A digital inclusion vision for next government
On 7 November 2012, the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) and the Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries (Hivos) will launch the 2012 edition of the Global Information Society Watch in Room 9 at 12:30 local time during the second day of the Internet Governance Forum at the Baku Expo Centre, in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Produced annually by APC and Hivos since 2007, the 2012 GISWatch edition addresses the theme “The internet and corruption – Transparency and accountability online.” Through nine thematic reports and over 50 country reports, it explores how the internet is being used to ensure transparency and accountability, the challenges that civil society activists face in fighting corruption and accounts of when the internet fails as an enabler of a transparent and fair society. By focusing on individual cases and stories of corruption, the country reports take a practical look at the role of the internet in combating corruption at local, national, regional and global levels.
The presentation will include Valeria Betancourt on behalf of APC and Monique Doppert and Loe Schout on behalf of Hivos. Short interventions of some of the reports’ authors present at the event will take place, among them Shawna Finnegan (Canada), Ritu Srivastava (India), Giacomo Mazzone (Italy), Alice Munyua (Kenya), Shahzad Ahmad (Pakistan) and Valentina Pelizzer (Bosnia and Herzegovina).
The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) will join APC and Hivos in the presentation to launch the publication “ICTs, the Internet and Sustainability: Where Next?” written by David Souter and Don MacLean.
The Internet & Society Co:llaboratory will also join APC, Hicos and IISD to present MIND 4. MIND stands for Multistakeholder Internet Dialogue. The 4th edition of MIND discusses Human Rights and Internet Governance. The key article was written by Shirin Ebadi, Nobel Peace Price Winner 2003 from Iran. Her article is discussed from various stakeholders perspectives: governments, private sector, civil society and technical community. Among the commentators are Carl Bildt, Swedish Foreign Minister, Marjette Schaake, member of the European Parliament, Jeremy Brookes, President of GNI, Markus Kummer, Vice-President of ISOC, Joy Liddicoat, APC’s Internet rights are human rights coordinator, and Jeremy Malcom, President of Consumer International. Mind is publisihed by the Collaboratory Internet & Society in Berlin, edited by Wolfgang Kleinwächter and supported by Google.
APC, Hivos, IISD and the Internet & Society Collaboratory invite all people present at the IGF to join the launch of these timely and promising publications.
