For schoolchildren, summer may be synonymous with fun. However, it doesn’t bring cheer to all. The vacation season also sees a spurt in child marriages. They are not restricted to the bastion of backwardness that north Karnataka is but are also rampant in IT City Bengaluru.
According to Anita Shivakumar, chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, the months of April and May witness an increased incidence of child labour and child marriage, leading to a rise in the number of school dropouts.
